Hierarchy of needs in a Human life

Human behavior is goal-directed and motivation creates goal-directed behavior. It can be said that needs can be handled through motivations. Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who left behind a legacy that is applied by today’s marketers. He proposed the Hierarchy of Needs Theory in 1943. This theory is also known as Classical Depiction of Human Motivation. Maslow through his theory suggested five needs in human beings: physiological need, Safety need, Love and Belonging need, Esteem need, and Self-actualization. Maslow through his theory showed the basic requirements of an individual.

The basic requirements for human to survive is ” Roti, Kapda aur Makaan” , it means “Food, Clothing and Shelter”,but in today’s society these basic needs have changed and with time needs have improvised to the luxurious needs. But we can say that these luxury can be desires or wants for individuals. And Maslow through his theory portrait all such desires that a human have in today’s society. In my life, still now, I have used or desired to use a lot of things to have a good lifestyle.

BASIC NEEDS

  • Physiological needs:  Physiological needs are the basic needs for all human being, and these needs help the individual to survive. The three basic requirements are food, shelter and clothing, without these three requirements one can’t survive. To survive one need to have proper proportion of food. I personally prefer rice, roti, dal, ghee, paneer. And due to marketing there are brands for these products, like,  Daawat rice, Amul paneer, Ashirbad Atta. But nowadays, there are brands or we can say restaurants which serves costly tasty fancy foods. Like Pizza Hut, Dominos, Burger King, all Chinese restaurants.

Then comes shelter, housings, housing complex, all costly apartments. Without a roof on top, an individual won’t be able to survive during extreme weathers like rain, winter, and summer. Beside shelter, water is an important basic need for a person. Without water one cannot survive. There are many campaigns on saving water. There are companies which provides purified waters like Aquaguard.

Psychological Needs

  • Belongingness and Love Need: No one can stay alone for their entire life. Each individual need someone to stay beside them during time of good and bad. Even I also need love and happiness and always want people to stay beside me. Beside people, things that make me feel happy are books, music, adventure activities, cakes, chocolates, perfumes and many more. I always feel loved when I travel to nature and do some adventure activities. And being a girl chocolates are delights for me.

Since we all leave in the era of technology, so we all are accustomed with smartphones, laptops, Wi-Fi, and all electronic gadgets. Due to smartphones, one can get connected overseas in few seconds through online video calling applications. It is said that in recent days one can leave without food but not without Internet .

Self-Fulfilment Needs

  • Self – Actualization: Self-actualization, as described by Maslow in his theory, talks about the ability to fulfil one’s   personal needs. Through this one gets to learn a lot about individual’s abilities to do something. When I was in school, I participated in NGO’s activities by going to village schools and teach students there of class 1 and class 2. This activity has helped me to gain self-confidence and made me experience lifestyle of rural areas.

Then in my under graduation college, I participated in adventure activities, which were arranged by Indian Mountaineering Foundation East Zone. Since they were collaborated with my college, I had the opportunity to meet some mountaineers and Everesters. As I read in a book that- Indians believe that any human who could stand on the summit of Everest must be an incarnation of Lord Shiva, and I believe that any person who climbs a mountain peak an  incarnation of Lord Shiva.

Beside these basic needs there are expensive requirements for these new generation like going to expensive restaurants, pubs, or going to costly shops for buying cloths. There are bike, car lovers, who love to buy expensive bikes and cars like Harley Davidson, Royal Enfield, Mercedes, Audi, BMW. There are people who always buys the latest IPhone that recently launch in market. But these are always different from a person’s basic needs than a person’s desire needs to enjoy a life.
